Witten, Netherlands

Witten is a district of the municipality of Assen in Drenthe, Netherlands. It lies between Bovensmilde and Assen. In the southwest of the town is connected to the motorway A 28.

Near the village is located the motorcycle TT Circuit Assen on which, among other things, the Dutch TT will be held as part of the motorcycle world championship.

In Witten, there are several campgrounds in the north of the village, a quarry has been created, which is much frequented during the summer months as a tourist destination.

For the first time a corridor called Witten was mentioned in documents in 1294. Between 1302 and 1487, the area belonged to the Cistercian monastery Mariënkamp ( Maria Campi ) in Assen. During the Reformation, the monastery were stripped of their possessions, Witten went in 1600 with the now settled farms in the possession of the so-called " Landschap Drenthe " about the forerunners of today's province of Drenthe. Today, several of the farms in Witten are under monument protection.

Buurtschap

Witten is officially called " Buurtschap " out of the community Assen, which is translated in Germany with Weiler. In fact, the size of this Buurtschap more of an independent hamlet or village.
