Wiwilí

Wiwilí is a city in the north of Nicaragua, about 20 km from the border with Honduras. The city lies on the Rio Coco, which rises in Honduras and empties into the Caribbean Sea. The river is the border between the departments of Nueva Segovia and Jinotega, which is why there are two parts Wiwilís: Wiwilí de Nueva Segovia on the right side of the river with about 16,500 inhabitants and Wiwilí de Jinotega on the left side of the river with about 58,000 inhabitants.

The place is one of the poorest areas in one of the poorest countries in Central America. About 40 percent of the population can neither read nor write.

With the city of Freiburg im Breisgau is a city partnership whose aim is mainly to improve the living conditions for the people living there. This also happens in the memory of the Freiburger physician Albrecht " Tonio " Pflaum, who since 1980 worked on behalf of the German Development Service. He was murdered in 1983 by the "Contras " who opposed the Sandinista revolutionary government since 1980. There are, among other projects in the areas of drinking water supply, agriculture, education and culture.
