Wiyot people

The Wiyot ( Chetco - Tolowa: wee- 'at, Yurok: weyet ) are still existing Indian tribe in California, near the Humboldt Bay in California. Culturally they are close to the Yurok.

Nowadays still exist about 450 Wiyot.

Sad notoriety reached the Wiyot by the Wiyot Massacre of 1860, in which on February 26, 1860 between 80 and 250 tribesmen were killed by white settlers. The massacre occurred at Tuluwat (also Tolowot ) near Eureka in Humboldt County, California, on an island that now bears the name Indian Iceland.
