Władysław Łuszczkiewicz

Władysław Luszczkiewicz ( born September 3, 1828 in Krakow, † May 23, 1900 ) was a Polish painter, art teacher and art historian.

Life

Władysław Luszczkiewicz was born the son of Michał and Emilia born Krzyżanowska. 1838-1843, he attended St. Anne's Grammar School, and then studied philosophy and history at the 1843-1845 Jagiellonian University, at the same time he studied until 1847 drawing and painting at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts with Wojciech Stattler. Thanks to an art scholarship of the Government of Galicia, he went to Paris, where he attended 1849-1850 courses at the École des Beaux -Arts. After his return to Krakow in 1850 he became a painter, art teacher and restorer of historic buildings in Krakow. In his more than 40 years as an art teacher Luszczkiewicz taught several generations of Polish painters, including Jan Matejko, Artur Grottger, Andrzej Grabowski, Aleksander Kotsis, Jacek Malczewski, Stanisław Wyspiański, Józef Mehoffer, Karol Maszkowski, Wojciech Weiss and many more.

As a painter Luszczkiewicz preferred mainly historical and religious subjects, and is considered a forerunner of historicism in Polish painting.
