Wolfgang Menzel

Wolfgang Menzel ( * June 21, 1798 in Waldenburg (now Polish Wałbrzych ), Silesia, † April 23, 1873 in Stuttgart ) was a German literary critic and writer in the pre-March period. He is attributed by the poets and thinkers, he has published in 1828 the famous saying.

Life

Wolfgang Menzel starred in the wars of liberation against Napoleon. In 1817 he graduated from high school in Breslau. From 1818 to 1820, he studied history, philosophy and literature at the universities of Jena and Bonn. During his studies he was 1818/19 member of the first student fraternity and was co-founder in 1819 of the old Bonner fraternity. He was a friend of Karl Ludwig Sand and Heinrich Heine. Wolfgang Menzel 1820 fled to Switzerland because he was persecuted for his machinations in the fraternity movement. From 1820 to 1824 he was a teacher in Aarau in 1824 and went to Heidelberg.

From 1825 he was editor of the literary - sheet to Cotta's morning paper for educated stands in Stuttgart. He started in the Fall of 1835 a reviewer's campaign, among others against Charles Gutzkow, he brought in 1831 as an employee to Stuttgart and who had now distanced themselves from him. Especially his aggressively put forward allegations of moral, religious and nationalistic nature contributed decisively to a devastating in the history of German literature engages in the literary life at: the prohibition - only to "school" has become in this way - Boys Germany.

His most important work is his history of literature, the revised two-volume first appeared as a 1828 1836 2nd enlarged edition in four volumes. The first edition was, inter alia, of great influence on the young Charles Gutzkow whose mentor Menzel of 1830-34 was.

The extraordinary valor and opinion- strong Wolfgang Menzel was like his critic Ludwig Borne as one of the fiercest opponents of the Goethe- Vormarz. Menzel's original liberalism transformed over time into a nationalist -oriented nationalism.

From 1833-1838 and 1848-1849 Menzel was a member of the Württemberg Landtag.
