Wolfgang Printz

Wolfgang Caspar Printz ( born October 10, 1641 Waldthurn, Upper Palatinate, † October 13, 1717 in Sorau ) was a composer, music writer and novelist.

Life

Printz was the son of a forester Upper Palatinate. He had hardly any training, before he enrolled in 1659 in Altdorf near Nuremberg. A musical talent is to be assumed, but undocumented. However, he also broke the undefined Altdorfer study time soon again in order to hire themselves out as a tutor. This employment was contrary to his desire to travel, because then offered him the opportunity to learn about the musical life of Italy. At the age of 21, he finally came in 1662 in the then cultural center of Dresden, where he was offered at the court of arts-friendly Silesian magnates Imperial Count Erdmann I of Promnitz the Kapellmeister. He traveled constantly in the wake of his new employer, even in Bohemian and Hungarian war camp.

After the death of his bread encoder in 1664 he accepted a position as cantor at the Sorauer church, raised a family and spent the next 52 years in a bustling activity as a composer as well as an author of musicological writings, which earned him the respect of the musical world in all of Germany. Similar to Johann Kuhnau, he published alongside some popular musicians novels. Under Erdmann II of Promnitz he again took over the management of the court chapel until the young Georg Philipp Telemann in 1704 used as his successor. This Printz mentioned in his 1740 autobiography. His extensive musical works is largely lost, but offers his Historical description today useful information on contemporary composers.
