Wolfgang Schutzbar

Called Wolfgang Schutzbar Milchling (* 1483, † 1566) was Grand Master of the Teutonic Order and Prince Abbot of the Abbey of Fulda.

Family

The family called Schutzbar Milchling, an Upper Hessian noble family, was one since the foundation in 1532 to the still existing Althessischen knighthood.

Wolfgang's parents were Crafft Schutzbar called Milchling jun. and his wife Margaret, the only child of Philip of Trohes. A brother Wolfgang, Adolf, was German Knight and Commander to Griefstedt in Thuringia. Another brother, Caspar, was abbot of the monastery Springiersbach, and a sister, Anna, was abbess of the convent Marie Castle at Rock Mountain.

Life

Wolfgang Schutzbar joined in 1507 the Teutonic Order a. In 1529 he was proposed by the then Landkomtur in Marburg Daniel Lehrbach coadjutor. Schutzbar then followed in 1529 Lehrbach in office and was until 1543 Landkomtur for the bailiwick of Hesse in Marburg.

In 1543 he was Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights, based in Mergentheim ( 1543-1566 ). He built there in 1564, the town hall and the first water line. 1544 Schutzbar of Emperor Charles V was invested with Prussia. In 1558 he was Prince-Abbot of Fulda.

Monument and Coat of Arms

On the Mergentheimer marketplace is his monument, the Milchling fountain. The coat of arms shows the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights Cross, in silver, a black bar cross with applied golden staff cross and golden lilies at the cross- arms; divided and split in box 1 in silver, a black bar cross in box 2 and 3 in silver three ( 2:1) called with the stalks to the three- pass connected black lime leaves ( also balls or hearts), family coat of arms Schutzbar Milchling, in box 4, the Mitra Fürstabts of the Abbey of Fulda.
