Wolfgang Stresemann

Wolfgang Stresemann ( born July 20, 1904 in Dresden, † November 6, 1998 in Berlin) was a German lawyer, author, orchestra director, conductor and composer.

Life

Stresemann grew up in Berlin and initially studied law, because he wanted to go originally his father Gustav Stresemann ( Chancellor, Secretary of State, Nobel Peace Prize winner ), following in the policy. At the same time he studied music, even in the twenties he entered Berlin as conductor. In the subject of the law, he received his doctorate with a thesis on " the law of the Cartel Court ." Because of the Jewish origin of his mother Kate Stresemann - added this was the fact that the ruling since 1933 Nazis had the father Gustav Stresemann fought politically until his death - is closed Wolfgang Stresemann all appearance and job opportunities. Under the impact of increasing persecution of Jews emigrated to Wolfgang Stresemann in 1939 with his family to the United States. There Stresemann worked as an assistant to Bruno Walter and chief conductor of the orchestra of Toledo (Ohio ), plus as a music critic. In 1956 he returned to the Federal Republic.

He was artistic director of the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra from 1959 to 1978 and again from 1984 to 1986 and thus the man behind Herbert von Karajan. Stresemann's estate is archived at the Berlin Academy of Arts.

His daughter Christina - former assistant Jutta Limbach - is a judge on the Federal Court.

He was buried in the forest cemetery Dahlem.
