Wolrad IV, Count of Waldeck

Wolrad IV (* July 7, 1588 at Schloss Eisenberg, † October 6, 1640 in Arolsen ) was Count of Waldeck and founder of the newer line of Waldeck- Eisenberg.

Family

He was the son of Count I. Josias of Waldeck and his wife Maria of Barby.

He married on September 8, 1607 in Durlach Anna von Baden-Durlach ( born June 13, 1587 † March 11, 1649 ), with whom he had ten children:

Life

Since the territorial policy of his father Josias Waldeck became more and more in opposition to the neighboring country county of Hesse, who had exercised considerable influence over the country during the Reformation. On the conflict occurred when the city Korbach 1615 Shire town judges deposed and a new judge requested by the Hessians. In contrast, the Counts of Waldeck went before. This led to the intervention of Hesse, who now claimed not only the seigniory but also the sovereignty over Waldeck. In 1621 Landgrave Moritz of Hesse- Kassel was even invade troops in Waldeck. At times, had to flee the country Wolrad. He asked taking advantage of family connections to the Dutch States General and the Governor Maurice of Orange -Nassau with success for assistance. His brother Christian turned to Emperor Ferdinand II. At the emperor's command the Hessians had to leave the occupied country.

In 1625 he and his brother Christian were handed the county Pyrmont. Since then, they called themselves Counts of Waldeck- Pyrmont. During the Thirty Years War, the Waldecker were indeed displaced from Pyrmont, received the county but later returned. By his wife came as a legacy 1639 the county in Cuylenburg is now the Netherlands and some other gentlemen in the possession of the house Waldeck.

Wolrad was with the company name The Frühespate member of the Fruit -bearing Society. He died 1640 and was buried at St. Kilian Church in Korbach.
