The Company is the largest retail company by market capitalization in Australia and New Zealand. Furthermore, Woolworths the largest distributor of food products in Australia and the second largest in New Zealand. In addition, the company is the largest distributors of alcohol and poker machine operator in Australia. Around 175,000 people are employed in the Group.
Company History
The company opened on December 5, 1924 Pitt Street in Sydney, the first shop. The founders were Percy Christmas, Stanley Chatterton, Scott Waine, George Creed and Ernest Williams. As a company name (company) Woolworths was chosen because standing in the Australian state to register the name available, although the retailer FW Woolworth Company was active in the United States. The name therefore does not come from corporate or financial ties to the U.S. retail companies, but is due to the fact that the company in Australia in 1924 was to register free. In the following years more stores opened in Australia. In 1929, the first shop in Wellington, New Zealand, opened. The first food store opened in New Zealand in Auckland in 1956 and the first supermarket in New Zealand was established in 1971.
