World ORT

The World ORT ( Organization - Reconstruction - Training) is a non-governmental organization that was founded in 1880 in Russia as the " Society for products and agricultural work ( among Jews ) ." The seat of ORT was moved to Berlin in 1921 and is located in Geneva today. In the over one hundred year history of its existence, well over a million people have undergone schooling at ORT. The organization is active in 58 countries today.

History

The organization was in the Tsarist Empire under the name " Общество ремесленного и земледельческого труда " ( Obschtschestwo remeslennogo i zemledeltscheskogo truda ( Society for products and agricultural work ( among Jews ))) founded. In April 1880, signed five Russian Jewish philanthropists, based on an edict of Tsar Alexander II, to promote a " private letter " the professional training of Jews in Russia. By 1905 one million rubles were collected for this purpose, but this sum was lost in the 1917 October Revolution. Until 1906, the organization received an official permit. First ORT consisted only in the Russian Empire. During this time there was an organizational goal in the resettlement of Jewish craftsmen from the Pale of Settlement in other parts of Russia.

1921 ORT was built in Berlin as an international organization under the name of World ORT Union. With the increasing internationalization of the social significance of World ORT, which was active both in the newly established States which had become independent from the Russian Empire, as well as in Germany, France, Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania rose. After since the 1920s former ORT students had settled in Palestine, ORT established soon after the founding of Israel vocational training courses for immigrants.
