In 1996, two former wrestlers of the former doctoral American Wrestling Association, a wrestling promotion that was called AWA Superstars Of Wrestling ( SOW) and looked in the tradition of former AWA, but was not identical to it.

The organizing under the AWA banner was possible because Verne Gagne had once failed to protect can be the naming rights.

As of 2005, Gagner, who is now " Gagne" was called and the storyline after referred to as " distant relative of Verne Gagne" began to sell the naming rights " AWA " to foreign wrestling promotions. Among other things, the AWA title were sold to Japanese, Canadian and British Promotions and discharged in these countries.

Gagner went so far that he sold the naming rights of the American Wrestling Association in sub-organizations of the competing NWA and this in turn could also unsubscribe AWA title.

On 30 October 2007 Gagner and Stewart explained in a press statement that the American Wrestling Association no longer feel bound by the territorial principle and would compete now in every single U.S. state. With this statement, the cooperation with the NWA was finally finished.
