Wright J65

The Wright J65 was an American turbojet engine based on the Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire, had acquired a manufacturing license for the Curtiss- Wright in 1950, to adapt it to the American demand. After 1953 it was produced in larger series. Actually, the market was already planned for 1951, but some delays in production mean that it could be delivered until two years later. Therefore, only relatively small numbers were achieved because the demand had now largely covered in this class, the Pratt & Whitney J57.

It was and remained the only jet engine of Curtiss -Wright and the setting of its production gave the company the jet engine completely.

The J65 is a Einwellentriebwerk. The axial compressor 7 has low-pressure and high-pressure stage 5. The blades of the first 3 steps are made of steel corresponding to the levels 4 to 7 made of aluminum and the last in step 8 to 13 made of stainless steel. The compressor is mounted on ball bearings front, back it has a roller bearing. The compressor housing is made of an aluminum alloy. The pressure ratio is 7:1, the enforced mass of air in the operating point is 55.3 kg / s

The combustion takes place at J65 in an annular combustion chamber having fuel injectors 36. The turbine has two stages. Both stages are connected with taper pins. The first stage has 110 blades, the second 75 to the combustion chamber through a ball bearing of the turbine set. The turbine inlet temperature is 802 ° C. The nozzle is made of steel. The engine control is done hydraulically by a manual input by controlling the flow of fuel. For lubrication, the engine oil a closed circuit with a tank of 18.9 liters. For the oil circulation system features 2 gear and 2 piston pumps.

3 fixing points are available for installation in the aircraft.

You start the engine, depending on the version, either with an electric starter, a small gas turbine ( APU), with the aid of a starter cartridge or with a pneumatic starter.
