Xaghra (pronounced " Schaara ," or: Ix - Xaghra ) is a village in the northwestern part of the island of Gozo in Malta. Xaghra is after Nadur the second largest village on the island and has 4041 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2010).

History

Presumably, this was the first populated part of Gozo, as one finds megalithic remains such as the Temple of Ġgantija, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the stone circle of Xaghra and the caves Xerri 's Grotto and Ninu 's Cave, which are accessed by private houses.

On the eastern outskirts of the village stands a restored windmill, which was originally commissioned by the then Grand Master of the Order of Malta Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, built in 1724 and now houses a mill museum.

Parish

The village church Basilica of the Nativity of Mary (English Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary ), locally known as il - Bambina, which is located in the town center, was founded in 1967 by Pope Paul VI. raised to the basilica.
