Yadgir district

Yadgir ( Kannada: ಯಾದಗಿರಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ) is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka. Administrative center is the city and eponymous Yadgir.

Geography

Yadgir is located in the northeast of Karnataka on the border of the neighboring Federal State of Andhra Pradesh. Neighboring districts are in the south of Raichur, Bijapur and Gulbarga in the west to the north ( all Karnataka ) and Andhra Pradesh Mahbubnagar in the east.

The district has an area of ​​5,234 square kilometers. The area is part of the Deccan Plateau and has an average elevation of 350 to 450 meters above sea level. North of the district capital of the same name runs through a chain of hills, the district area. Two major rivers flow through the district Yadgir: In the south of Krishna, one of the main streams of the Deccan, forms the border to the district of Raichur. The Bhima, its main tributary, flows in a north-south direction through the district, and finally flows into the Krishna.

Yadgir is divided into three taluks Shorapur, Shahpur and Yadgir.

History

The history of the district is largely identical to that of the district Gulbarga, to which the territory belonged until 2010. On April 10, 2010 the new district Yadgir was formed from the southern part of the district of Gulbarga.

Population

According to the Indian census 2011 Yadgir has 1,172,985 inhabitants. The population trend is clearly increasing: between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by 22.7 percent. The growth rate is well above the average of Karnataka ( 15.7 per cent) and is the third highest of all districts of Karnataka. The population density is 224 inhabitants per square kilometer, but well below the average of the state (319 inhabitants per square kilometer). The district Yadgir is clearly influenced rural: only 18.8 of the population live in cities. The urbanization rate is now less than half as high as the average of Karnataka ( 38.6 per cent). Also, the level of education is very low: only 52.4 percent of the residents of the district can read and write. The literacy rate is by far the lowest of all the districts of Karnataka and is well below the average for the state ( 75.6 percent).
