Yair Naveh

Jair Naweh, Hebrew יאיר נוה, ( born 1957 ) is a senior Israeli military, who retired from active service in 2007. Naweh rose to major general and led from 2005 to 2007, the Israeli Central Command.

Military career

Naweh came back in 1975 military service and served in the Golani Brigade from the company commander to brigade commander. From 1989 he led the brigade on the border with Lebanon, from 1991 again the Golani Brigade. From 1994 to 1996 he took over as head of the security department of the ground forces and to 1999 he commanded the infantry and paratroopers. From 1999 to 2001 he commanded the Gaza Division and subsequently he worked as chief of staff in the headquarters of the Israel Defense Forces. In 2003 he was promoted to Major General and took over the management of the GOC Home Front command. From 2005 until his retirement from the service in 2007, he headed the Israeli Central Command.

Naweh studied in addition to his military career, history, political science and Middle East studies. He lives in Zichron Yaakov.

Political significance

The appeal Nawehs commander of the Central Command in 2005 was understood by the individual media as a move by the then Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to bring those regarded as conservative- religious Naweh in connection with Israel's unilateral disengagement plan in a position in which he described the evacuation of Jewish had to implement settlements in order to divide the religious- Orthodox camp. To participate in the evictions Naweh from the extremist camp was attacked partly solid.

In 2006 Naweh expressed the fear that Abdullah II will be the most recent Jordanian king, as the population of Jordan consists of 80% of Palestinians and Islamist movements among the Palestinians pose a threat to the Hashemite dynasty. The statement led to diplomatic tensions between Israel and Jordan, in consequence of which Naweh apologized to the Jordanian king.
