Yaiza (municipality)

Yaiza is the southernmost of the seven churches of the Canary Island of Lanzarote.

Character

Among the natural attractions in the municipality include the crater of El Golfo, parts of the Montañas del Fuego ( Fire Mountains ) in the Timanfaya National Park, the Papagayo beaches and the mountain range of Los Ajaches.

Yaiza received several award the most beautiful church in Lanzarote. Here was born in the island's capital Arrecife artist and environmentalist César Manrique played a significant role.

A place of the municipality of Yaiza is the modern resort of Playa Blanca (about 8 km southwest of the capital of Yaiza). There are many hotels and apartment complexes on the sandy beach, a stone pier, ferry to Corralejo in Fuerteventura and excursion boats along the coast with the Papagayo beaches, tavernas and bars. Yaiza on the island of Lanzarote Tias the municipality with the second-highest percentage of foreigners, it is at 32.6 percent (as of November 2006).

History

The main town of Yaiza, like his neighbor Uga, affected by the massive volcanic eruptions on Lanzarote in the thirties of the 18th century.

The village no longer existed practically to outbreaks and was rebuilt. Agriculture, the main source of income of Yaiza, however, was no longer possible on the spilled lava surfaces in Northern Yaizas. The residents did everything they could to make the small town arise again in its former beauty. Today, tourism and viticulture is the main source of income of the municipality.
