Yamato Monogatari (Japanese大 和 物语, literally tales of old Japan, and stories from the province of Yamato ) is a narrative, which is one of the Ise Monogatari to the genre of " Uta Monogatari ". In this early form of the narrative ( monogatari ), which was originally handed down orally and written their early fixations represent Uta Monogatari, say Waka and prose, Setsuwa are still poetry (originally orally transmitted tales and legends materials) mixed together. The exact time of origin and the author are unknown. It is believed that the author belonged to the nobility of the court, who used this form of poetry in the middle of the Heian period. Probably the Yamato Monogatari was built around the year 951 in the reign of Murakami Tennō. The factory covers 173 stories and 300 Waka, the two maki ( rolls) have survived.

Commonly, there are two parts: the first part up to 140 anecdote has above all the court and the aristocracy to the object, while the second part, from anecdote 141 deals with unrequited love, separation and reunion. In the second part formally outweigh the Setsuwa. [Note 1] How anecdote tells 147 (the " Ikudagawa Sage "生 田 川 伝 説) of the suicide of a woman who receives two marriage proposals and desperately plunges into the river Ikuda.

The Yamato Monogatari is probably influenced by the older Ise Monogatari. The first anecdote and the 147th take direct reference to the poet Ise. The Yamato Monogatari reported by " Fujiwara (no) Sumitomo ran" (藤原 純友 の 乱), a pirate uprising that culminated in a fateful battle 936.
