Yamtuan Besar

Yamtuan Besar is a Malay title of nobility and referred to the head of the state of Negeri Sembilan. The Yamtuan Besar is selected from the four Undang, the local rulers of the districts of Sungai Ujong, Jelebu, Johol and Rembau for life.

Negeri Sembilan is the only Malaysian federal state with an elective monarchy. Since 1773, the head is determined in this way. The system of elective monarchy at the subnational level was adopted after independence of Malaysia in 1957 at the federal level for the determination of the Yang di - Pertuan Agong, but here the terms are limited to five years.
