Yankee Station

Yankee Station was called a point in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War, were flying from the aircraft carriers of the United States Navy air strikes against North Vietnam.

The name is derived from the geographical reference " Y" with this letter in the NATO alphabet Yankee is pronounced. The point was some 160 km off the coast at 16 ° N latitude and 110 ° east longitude.

Normally, three aircraft carriers on Yankee Station, thought to run every 12 hours flight operations were: the one between noon and midnight, another between midnight and noon, and the third in daylight, so that operation readiness was given around the clock. In addition, there was thus an increased willingness in daylight, the attacks were generally more effective and thus more was flown.

The first aircraft carrier on the station was the USS Kitty Hawk (CV- 63) from April 1964 was in service there. The USS Constellation ( CV-64 ) came in July this.
