Yao Wenyuan

Yao Wenyuan (Chinese姚文元, Pinyin Yao Wenyuan, * 1931 in Zhuji, Zhejiang Province, † 23 December 2005 in Shanghai ) was a political leader of the People's Republic of China, during the Cultural Revolution with Mao Zedong's wife Jiang Qing, Zhang Chunqiao and Wang Hongwen the political leadership group was formed, which lost control after Mao's death and shortly thereafter called " gang of Four" as the main responsible for the "chaos of the 10 years" ( shí十年浩劫nián Haojie ) was presented.

Life

Yao Wenyuan began his career in Shanghai as a literary critic. After he had met with Zhang Chunqiao, he focused on campaigns against unpopular authors. His article of 10 November 1965 on Hai Rui, the Jiang Qing had commissioned, was the beginning of the Cultural Revolution.

1969 Yao was in the IX. Elected Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, where he devoted himself to propaganda. On 1 June 1975 he received Ernst Aust, the chairman of the KPD / ML.

After the fall of the Gang of Four in 1976, he was arrested in 1981 and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. 1996 Yao Wenyuan was released from prison. Since then he has lived in his hometown of Shanghai and conducted research on the subject of Chinese history. After the death of Zhang Chunqiaos in April 2005, Yao was the last survivor of the Gang of Four.

Yao died in Shanghai from the effects of diabetes disease.
