Yasothon is one of the poorest areas of Thailand. The people here deserve only about a third of the average income. This results in a steady rural exodus or rather, to a flight to Bangkok.

Modest rice cultivation and textile production are the carriers of economic development.

In March 2000, an attempt at self-government business was done. They tried to set up their own local currency, the Bia, which was used instead of the baht (1 baht Bia = 1 ). The residents were able to take interest-free loans of up to 500 Bia in claim and thus act with each other. Outside the municipal boundary of the Bia had no validity. The Bank of Thailand put a stop to this approach after just one month.
