Yass (music)

Yass was a music genre and a cultural movement in Poland in the 1990s. It is considered one of the most important cultural phenomena of the post-communist Poland. The activity of the yass scene focused on the cities of Bydgoszcz and Gdańsk, but were under their direct or indirect influence and are still to musicians from many other parts of Poland. Over time, Bydgoszcz Club Mozg developed (Eng. brain) to the center of Yass scene.

Yass was in strong demarcation from the then Polish jazz scene and was not accepted by it for a long time (although there was individual musicians who the " Yasser " well recognized, such as Tomasz Stanko or Jan " Ptaszyn " Wroblewski ).

As an author of the concept of Yass applies Ryszard " Tymon " Tymanski, leader of numerous projects of the subculture, including the " flagship " of the Yass - the band Miłość. The Yass music combined elements of jazz (especially free jazz ), the modern improvised music, rock music, punk and folk.

When the first Yass albums which are published in 1992 Tance Bydgoskie the band Trytony and Miłość of Miłość.

A characteristic property of Yass - movement was the large number of short-lived projects often that some were founded and named for a live performance ad hoc. Among the most important groups of the genre were: Miłość, (Maestro) Trytony, Łoskot, Mazzoll & Arhythmic Perfection.
