Yass River

Yass River Rail Bridge on the Yass River

The Yass River is a river in the southeast of the Australian state of New South Wales. It rises at Wamboin southwest of Lake George and from there flows to the northwest. The town of Yass is on the river just before its confluence with the Lake Burrinjuke and thus into the Murrumbidgee River.

There are two competing theories on the origin of the name ' Yass '. A member of Hume's expedition to be climbed into a tree to get an overview of the country, and when he was asked whether it acted to good grazing land, he replied " Yass " ( yes, dt: yes ). Other people claim that the name comes from Aboriginesausdruck ' Yharr ' - was derived - apparently the expression of a local tribe for the river. The German translation is " flowing water".
