Yechiel of Paris

Yechiel ben Joseph of Paris (* end of the 12th century in Meaux, † 1286 in Palestine ) was a rabbi, Talmudist and Tosafist from northern France.

Life

He was a student of Rabbi Judah ben Isaac Messer Leon, and succeeded him as Rosh Yeshiva of Paris. From him many Tosafot come. He became known as an opponent of Nicholas Donin at the Paris Talmuddisputation from 1240, which led to the first major Talmud combustion. He remained head of the School of Paris. In 1260 he emigrated with a part of his followers to Israel and settled in Acre, where he founded the Talmud Midrash ha - Gadol school de - Paris.
