Yehezkel Braun

Yehezkel Braun ( born January 18, 1922 in Breslau) is an Israeli composer.

Life

Yehezkel Braun grew up from the age of two in very close connection with traditional Jewish music and the eastern Mediterranean in Israel. The backgrounds of these influences can be heard in his compositions.

Brown is a graduate of the Israel Academy of Music and Master of Tel Aviv University in Greek and Latin Philology. In 1975, he studied Gregorian chant with Dom Jean Claire at the Benedictine monastery of Solesmes in France. His main academic interests are traditional Jewish melodies and Gregorian music. Brown gave lectures on these and other topics at universities and conferences in England, France, USA, Germany, Italy and Israel.

Works

His compositions include choral works; a cappella and with orchestras, or chamber combinations, songs with piano or other instrumental combinations, chamber music and orchestral works, music for films and TV, theater, ballet and arrangements of traditional Jewish melodies.

In addition to his compositions Brown has published an anthology of traditional Jewish folk songs, translations into Hebrew of classical Greek poetry and essays mainly on melody and modality. Brown is professor emeritus at the University of Tel Aviv.

Prizes and awards

He was awarded the Israel Prize for Music in 2001. In addition, he still received the prize of the city of Tel Aviv and the ACUM Prize.
