Yekaterinogradskaya

Jekaterinogradskaja (Russian Екатериноградская ) is a Cossack village near Prochladny in the Russian Caucasus republic of Kabardino -Balkaria with 3675 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

The village is situated near the mouth of Malka in the Terek.

History

1777 Prince Potemkin had built there, named after Catherine the Great (Russian Ekaterina ) Jekaterinograder fortress, where the Georgian Military Road began. 1786 received the Staniza municipal law as the capital of the newly created provinces of the Caucasus. After installation of the Administration Georgiyevsk 1790 Jekaterinograd remained until 1802 administrative center of a Ujesds. 1822 the fortress was razed and Jekatarinograd was again Staniza under the present name.

In the Soviet period the Cossack village was named Krasnogradskaja (of Russian krasny for red), but in the 1990s, back to the original name.
