Yellowtail flounder ( Limanda ferruginea )

The yellowtail flounder ( Limanda ferruginea, Syn Pleuronectes ferruginaeus ) is a rechtsäugiger flatfish with oblong- oval body. It is about half as wide as long. It can at a weight of 1.5 kg to a length of 64 cm. Her eyes are so close together that almost touch the round eye sockets. The coloring of the skin is brownish above to slaty -olive with irregular larger rust colored spots ( ferruginea ). The caudal fin is yellow - a striking feature of this type ( hence the name). On the blind side is white to yellowish on the caudal peduncle.

The yellowtail flounder is distributed in the Northwest Atlantic, it comes from Southern Labrador ( Canada ) to the Chesapeake Bay ( USA) ago.

She lives mainly on sandy to muddy bottoms at depths of 40 to 85 meters. Their diet consists mainly of small invertebrates, mainly polychaetes, crustaceans and occasionally small fish such as sand eels and capelin. It is fished commercially and marketed primarily in North America. Experiments with breeding in aquaculture are carried out.
