Yenching University

The Yanjing University (燕京 大学, Yanjing Daxue ) was a major university with a Christian background in Beijing, which existed from 1916 to 1949.

The university was formed by the merger of three Christian colleges in China, namely

  • Peking University or Huiwen University (汇 文 大学), which was founded in 1889 by the Methodist Episcopal Church.
  • The united college Tongzhou (通州 协和 大学)
  • The united college for women of North China (华北 协和 女子 大学), whose predecessor was from 1864.

In the university, which was originally founded under the name Peking University, prevailed in the early years of chaos, which were due to the fact that it was financed by several churches. In 1919, John took over Leighton Stuart, who later became U.S. ambassador to Beijing, the position of the Rector and named the facility in Yenching University has to offer. He was able to open up American financial sources (about Charles Martin Hall and a publisher) and was able to hire Imperial gardener to make the campus.

The education priorities of the University were in theology, law and medicine, for which in the late 1920s arts and sciences came. 1928 saw the foundation of today on the Harvard campus existing, legally and financially independent Harvard - Yenching Institute by the Yanjing and Harvard University. In the 1930s, the Yenching University was one of the top universities in China. In teaching, there was a great academic freedom. During the Second Sino- Japanese War, Beijing was occupied by Japanese troops; the university was evacuated to Chengdu ( Sichuan ).

After the founding of the communist People's Republic of China, the Yanjing University was closed with her Christian background and merged with Peking University. Three years later (1952 ) was moved to the campus of Peking University in the territory of the former Yenching University in the Haidian District.
