Yeruham

Jeroham, also Yeroham (Hebrew ירוחם ) is a local association in southern Israel in the northern Negev desert. The nearest major town is Dimona.

History

Jeroham was founded on January 9, 1951, almost three years after the Israeli state was founded (1948 ) as a developing city and should serve primarily as a residential area for workers at the nearby phosphate works.

The first immigrants came from Romania. The majority of the population is of North African and Indian descent. The famous Israeli movie end of the world left is a direct allusion to the relations between the Indian and North African immigrants during the founding period Jeroham (without the city to mention each). The film is among other things to a cricket match. In fact, cricket is very popular in Jeroham, although this sport is very underdeveloped in Israel.

Until 1965 Jeroham was on the main road to Eilat. When the new road was built through the Arava Valley, the resort lost through traffic, which has an adverse effect on their development. Despite the previous promotion and the influx of new immigrants ( about 2,000 between 1990 and 2002 ), the city is growing slowly. She had on 31 December 2004 reached only 8700 inhabitants, which is partly due to the isolated location in the northern Negev.

Economy

In Jeroham there are some large industries for the manufacture of glass bottles, medicines, food and cosmetics.

Tourism plays hardly any role, although there are three points of interest in town near:

  • The "Big Crater " ( haMachtesch HaGadol / Makhtesh Chatira ), the second largest erosion crater in the Negev desert. The crater represents In him we find fossilized trees and coral reefs, as well as colored sandstone formations geological window.
  • The Jeroham park with a large lake. There the winter floods and the purified waste water of the city are jammed.
  • Several small archaeological sites, especially from the Byzantine period.

Policy

Since 2005, Amram Mitzna mayor of the city. The former mayor of Haifa and chairman of the Avodah was sent to Jeroham to redevelop the city financially after it was close to bankruptcy. Prior to its predecessor Baruch Elmakayes had been dismissed because of the financial problems the Ministry of Interior of the Office.
