Yervant Voskan

Osgan Efendi, who was born as Yervant Hagopi Voskan (Armenian Երվանդ Հակոբի Ոսկան, * 1855 in Constantine Opel, † 1914) was an Ottoman painter, sculptor and professor of Armenian descent. He was at one time the only sculptor in the Ottoman Empire.

Life

Yervant Voskan was in Istanbul, the son of Hagop Vosgan (1825 - 1907) and grandson of Voskan Gotogyan from Erzurum born, the caster at the Imperial mint was. After Yervant had received his primary education from his father, he visited the Armenian Catholic Makruhyan School in Beşiktaş. In 1866 he went to Venice to study at the Murad - Raphaelian school. He began teaching at the Art Academy in Constantinople Opel sculpture on 1 March 1883. At that time he was the first and only teacher of sculpture in the Ottoman Empire.

Together with Osman Hamdi Bey operation Osgan Efendi, the first science-based archaeological research in the history of the Ottoman Empire. His research included the grave at Nemrut Dagi sanctuary ( Commagene ) in Southeastern Anatolia. Osgan Efendi was the restorer of the Alexander Sarcophagus. Osgan Efendi in 1908 finally took leave of the Academy and died six years later.
