Yi Sang

Yi Sang ( born September 14, 1910 in Seoul, † April 17, 1937 in Tokyo ) was a Korean writer.

Life

Yi Sang, born as Kim Hae -gyeong in Seoul, graduated from the Gyeongseong high school for technology with training in architecture and worked as a draftsman for the Japanese General Government.

In 1929 he was in the design competition for the design of the cover of the Joseon Geonchuk ( 조선 건축 Korea and architecture ) as the cover design of the magazine Joseon geonchukhoe excellent ( 조선 건축 회 Korean Society of Architecture). In 1930 he debuted with his prose narrative December 12 in the journal Joseon. In 1931 circumstances of termination ( 휴직 과 사정 ). In the same year he published several poems written in Japanese as strange counter-reactions ( 이상한 가역 반응 ) or view the Crow ( 오감도 乌 瞰 图).

From 1933 Yi Sang gave up his job because of increasing tuberculosis complaints and devoted himself to literature. In 1936 he traveled to Japan, where he was arrested by the police. Because of the prison stay, his health deteriorated rapidly. He was released on bail and taken to the University Hospital of Tokyo where he eventually died.

During his lifetime, Yi Sang was hardly known. It was not until 1950, when his works were reissued, he earned enormous popularity. Particularly well known is the story wing, which was translated into several languages. Named after him, Yi Sang Literature Prize is one of the major awards for South Korean authors.
