Yiorgos Batis

Giorgos Batis (Greek Γιώργος Μπάτης, * 1885 in Methana, † March 10, 1967 in Piraeus ) was a Greek singer, composer and Bouzouki-/Baglamas-Spieler.

Life

His family moved from the village of Kato Mouska Methana 1902 to Piraeus. Batis experienced the time of the Balkan wars, refugee flows to the Asia Minor catastrophe, the world economic crisis and the Metaxas dictatorship.

Giorgos Batis was a virtuoso on the Baglamas. He is not as well known as Markos Vamvakaris than all others Rembeten from the Piraeus of the 30s. His texts have been censored by the Metaxas dictatorship. Therefore, he vowed never to resume a song. A total of 16 compositions by him are preserved on tape. " Jiftopoula sto hamam " (see song example) interpreted the Greek singer Glykeria and made this movie in which approximates Batis the world of gypsy women, famous.

He was also called "The King of Piraeus ". The global economic crisis also dragged Piraeus in poverty, but Batis opened, ironically, his " one-man coffee shops " in the " road of hopelessness ," at the direction of the mayor, Zorz A. Bate, No. 262 (see Zelepos, p 143)

His nickname was " Zorz ". His real (from the Russian coming ) name was Giorgos Tsoros. He played with Markos Vamvakaris, Anestis Delias and Stratos Pagioumtzis in the 30s in Piräotischen quartet, called the Tetras. Batis was coffee house owners to dance teacher. His music business was the center of the scene ( " Piatsa " ) of Piraeus. Batis is often associated with the shadow theater figure Karagiozis - compared to a satirical character who takes the life world of Greece on the grain or the figure Stavrakis, the tramp in hat, booties, worry beads, suit and sash.
