Yonne

The Yonne department [ jɔn ] is a French department of order number 89 It is in the northeast of the country in the Burgundy region, and is named after the river Yonne. In Gallic times the Yonne bore the name of the river goddess Icauna.

Geography

The Yonne department is bordered to the northeast by the department of Aube, on the east by the department of Côte- d'Or, on the south by the department of Nièvre, in the west of the Loiret department in north and west by the department of Seine -et- Marne. It covers the northwestern part of Burgundy ( Avallonais and Auxerrois ), the southwestern part of the Champagne ( Sens ) and a piece of the southeastern part of Orléanais ( Puisaye and Gâtinais ).

The department is located on the old road from the Seine on the Rhônebecken to the Mediterranean. The land is mostly flat, in the southern part it comprises foothills of Morvangebirges, in the northern part wooded hills. The department is traversed in a northerly direction from the Yonne.

History

The department was created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790 in application of the law of 22 December 1789, part of the old province of Burgundy.
