Yorkdale (TTC)

Yorkdale is an above-ground subway station in Toronto. It lies immediately south of Highway 401 on the Yonge- University - Spadina line of the Toronto Subway, at the Allen Road The station, which has a central platform, is used daily by an average of 24,930 passengers (2009 /10).

Station

The station is located in the median strip of Allen Road, a multi-lane access road to Highway 401 is named after the namesake shopping center, which is accessible via a covered pedestrian bridge. The bridge also provides access to the bus station Yorkdale Bus Terminal; there connecting flights to eight buses of GO Transit in the neighboring districts as well as intercity buses from Ontario Northland and Greyhound. A second output at the southern end of the station leads to Ranee Avenue, where a bus urban transport company Toronto Transit Commission operates. In addition, the commuters is a park -and-ride 1144 chargeable parking available.

The station design was by the renowned architect Arthur Erickson, for which he was in 1982 awarded the Architecture Award of the Governor General. A domed glass roof extends over the entire length of the platform. It ends symmetrically at the escalators and stairs at both ends, giving the appearance of a dome is formed. The side walls of concrete have oval window and are connected through the tracks with the glass roof.

History

The opening of the station took place on 28 January 1978 together with the section between St. George and Wilson.

In the early years the artwork Arc -en- ciel adorned (French: Rainbow ) by Michael Hayden, the Station: A specially -designed computer system controlled 158 different colored gas discharge tubes, the so formed the glass roof lit and a kind of rainbow. The signal connected to the computer system triggered when entering a train from one pulsing sequence. The system proved over time to be too difficult to maintain, which is why the installation was removed at the beginning of the 1990s.
