Yosef Shalom Eliashiv

Joseph Shalom Elyashiv ( born April 10, 1910 in Siauliai, Russian Empire; † July 18, 2012 in Jerusalem, Hebrew יוסף שלום אלישיב ) was a living in Jerusalem charedischer rabbi and Posek. Elyashiv was active until his death as a legal scholar and one of the senior leaders of both Israel and the diaspora of the Lithuanian- haredi community. Many Ashkenazi Jews regarded him as Posek Ha - dor, the leading authority in matters relating to Halakha, the Jewish law.

Life

Joseph Shalom Elyashiv was a grandson of Rabbi Shlomo Elyashiv Kabbalistic ( the Leshem, 1841-1925 ) of Siauliai. His father was Abraham Elyashiv of Homel (now Belarus ), his mother's name was Chaya Moussa Elyashiv. He was an only child, his parents got him after 17 years of marriage. The original last name of his father was Erener, but this took the name of his father in order to obtain a certificate that an entry in the British Mandate of Palestine allowed the family. The Elyashivs went to Palestine in 1922, when Joseph was twelve years old.

Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, Chief Rabbi of Israel, suggested Sheina Chaya (d. 1994), daughter of Rabbi Aryeh Levin, before marriage partner for Elyashiv. The couple had five sons and seven daughters; Six of their daughters married significant rabbinic people - so his eldest daughter, for example, married to the well-known Israeli Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky. One son died as a child from typhus, a daughter was born in 1948 by Jordanian shelling killed. At the time of his death Elyashiv was estimated at 1,000 descendants.

Spiritual and political leader

Elyashiv was spiritual leader of the ultra-Orthodox Degel HaTorah - party, which is also represented in the Knesset. He had great influence on the policy of the Party, which is currently part of the United Torah Judaism alliance. Degel HaTorah held strictly to all its decisions and instructions. In 1989, in the formation of the party, Rabbi Elazar Menachem chess Elyashiv asked about successfully to participate in their political leadership. He lived in the large public meetings and participated in decisions. Most Rosh Yeshiva, who belonged to the movement of Agudath Israel of America, caught up with his mind and followed his advice and his policies. He spent most of his time studying the Talmud and lectured on him and the Shulchan Aruch at a synagogue in Jerusalem's neighborhood Me'a She'arim, where he also had his residence.

Elyashiv called his ultra-orthodox followers repeated for a boycott of all government programs, be it education, national or military service.

Works

The halachic decisions and insights Elyashivs were held in several books. The multi-volume Kovetz Teschuvos includes responsa, the questions which have arisen over many years have emerged. His ethical and preach comments related to the Torah, most from the 1950s to arise were collected as Divrei Aggadah and published.
