The song was from Phil Spector ( at the same time the music producer) written, Barry Mann and his wife Cynthia Weil. After the three had completed the work, it was the Righteous Brothers offered. The song was recorded from August to November in 1964 in Studio A of the Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles. The Righteous Brothers were not real brothers, but a singing duo, consisting of the bass - baritone Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield whose partners. In the background, a girls' choir is used, which also includes the young Cher belonged ( to hear the crescendo of the song ). Among the session musicians saxophonist Jim Horn was appointed, who had often worked for Spector. Barry Mann and his partner Cynthia Weil composed the song along the lines of Baby I Need Your Lovin ' the Four Tops (see Holland- Dozier -Holland) in a hotel where they structured it in a hotel piano. When she Composition Phil Spector, the chief of the label Philles Records paraded, this was immediately excited and changed with them the bridge.

Production

The piece is by arrangement and sound technology one of the most characteristic examples of the " Wall of Sound " as the typical mode of production of Phil Spector was called. This included the orchestral, almost symphonic voicing with violins and brass sections, compact mixed by overdubbing at Goldstar Studio A Los Angeles over the other. Been arranged by Gene Page recording with members of the Wrecking Crew, including Glen Campbell ( rhythm guitar), Don Randi ( piano ), Barney Kessel (6- string bass ), Carol Kaye ( Fender Bass ), Ray Pohlman ( bass) and Earl Palmer (drums), required a total of 38 takes. Alone, the use of three bass instruments shows how bass loaded the sound was. Cynthia Weil, however, was of the opinion that the song " too slow and too long" was to exist as a hit in the "British Invasion". It was mixed in another end that made the song seem even more dramatic. The playing time of the play was three minutes and 45 seconds and was advised too long for that time for airplay format. After the final mix the ballad with the catalog number was. " Philles 124 " published on 5 December 1964. Already on 12 December 1964, she entered the U.S. charts, where it reached the first place on 6 February 1965. They succeeded the piece in the UK; it was played worldwide over eight million times on the radio, so that refuted the initial fears of its makers and brought it to the million-seller status.
