Youssouf Saleh Abbas

Youssouf Saleh Abbas ( born 1952 in Abeche ) is a Chadian politician. He was on 16 April 2008 to 5 March 2010 Prime Minister of his country.

Life and career

Youssouf Saleh Abbas was born in Abeche in the region Wadai in eastern Chad. After obtaining his baccalauréat in 1973, he studied in the Soviet Union and in France, where he earned a master's degree in international law. After his return to Chad, he took a 1979-1981 in various posts at the Ministry of Foreign Relations. After that he was from July 1 to December 25, 1981 Diplomatic Adviser of Goukouni Oueddei, the president of the transitional government GUNT, and Chef de Cabinet on 6 December until the fall Oueddeis on June 7, 1982.

Later Abbas was Advisor to the Director General of the Foreign Ministry from 20 November 1992 until 15 December 1996. He was also vice president of the Sovereign National Conference, which lasted from January to April 1993. From December 16th 1996 to August 13, 1997, he was Director General of the Ministry of Planning and Coordination.

As an opponent of President Idriss Déby Abbas went on for several years in exile in France, where he worked as an External Coordinator Founded in 1998, active in the Tibesti rebel movement MDJT. On 31 October 2001, he joined together with other members of the external coordination back because of differences with the MDJT chief Youssouf Togoïmi. After an agreement with the government, he returned to Chad and in 2006 was consultant Déby of International Relations and in 2007 its representative towards the EUFOR and MINURCAT.

He remained in this post until Déby appointed him on 15 April 2008 as prime minister. The appointment of the originating from the eastern Chad Abbas as prime minister departs from past practice Déby ( himself originally from the north of ), prime minister from the south of the country to appoint. You should presumably help to contain the rebel activity in eastern Chad. In public, Youssouf Saleh Abbas was largely unknown until then, but he enjoyed a good reputation in political circles.
