Yttria is a chemical compound, more specifically, the oxide of yttrium. It is thermodynamically very stable and resistant to many reactive molten metals such as titanium or uranium.
Occurrence
Yttrium oxide occurs naturally as a component present in various Yttriummineralen ( Samarskite, Yttrobetafit ).
Production and representation
Yttria is technically calcining eg Yttrium oxalate obtained in the air.
Properties
Yttrium oxide having a refractive index of 1.85 and a cubic crystal structure in the C- type oxide of the lanthanides.
Use
Yttrium oxide is used:
- As a connection for high temperature resistant applications (eg as a coating material for graphite in nuclear engineering )
- As a sintering aid of ceramic materials
- Used for the stabilization of zirconium ( IV) oxide (for example, oxygen sensors, or in the dental art)
- Diluent of uranium oxide for fuel ( uranium oxide forms a solid solution )
- For the extraction of yttrium and yttrium compounds other
- Optical coatings
- As starting material for high-temperature superconductors ( YBCO)
- As starting material for (red ) phosphors for CRT monitors
- Together with thorium for the production of infrared and ultraviolet light permeable glass
