Yukio Endo

Yukio Endō (Japanese远藤 幸雄, Endō Yukio, born January 18, 1937 in Akita, Akita Prefecture; † 25 March 2009) was a Japanese artistic gymnast. He won five gold and two silver medals in the Olympics and was the inventor of the eponymous endo- straddle on the high bar.

Work

At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 Endō was a member of the Japanese team, won the gold in the team competition. Two years later at the World Championships in Prague Endō won a total of seven medals, including two gold, only on pommel horse he remained without a medal. In multi- fight, he finished second behind Yuri Titov from the Soviet Union.

In Tokyo at the Olympic Games in 1964 Endō won the all-around and the parallel bars and with the team for his floor routine, he received silver behind the Italians Franco Menichelli. In the gymnastics world championships 1966 in Dortmund Endō won the team gold and silver in two apparatus finals. His last major championship as an active Turner were the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, where he won for the third time with the team Olympic gold. In the horse jump, he won silver behind Mikhail Voronin from the Soviet Union.

After his career was Endō professor at Nippon University. Several times he served as coach and head of the delegation, the Japanese gymnasts team at the Olympic Games. He was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1999. Endō died in March 2009 of esophageal cancer.
