Yury Osipov

Yuri Sergeyevich Osipov (Russian Юрий Сергеевич Осипов; Yurii Sergeevich Osipov English transcription; * July 7, 1936 in Tobolsk ) is a Russian mathematician and specialist in mechanics. Since 1987 he is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and was its president from 1991 to 2013.

Life

After studying Mechanical Engineering at the State University of Gorky Ural, Osipov initially worked at his alma mater, before 1969 at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Ural Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR went. He was head of department in 1972, the differential equations and from 1986 the entire institution. In 1993 he went to Moscow to take up the post of Director of the Steklov Institute of Mathematics, a position he held until 2004.

1965 Osipov received his doctorate in 1971 habilitation (Russian Ph.D. ), 1975, he received the title of professor. 1984 Osipov was elected as a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR ( in mechanics and control processes department ) and three years later a full member ( Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mechanics and Control Processes). In 2013 he stood for re-election, but withdrew his candidacy at the Bureau meeting of the Academy fifteen days before the election returns. On May 29, 2013 Vladimir Fortov was elected his successor. Osipov was concerned with dynamic systems and their control, with applications in mechanics and engineering.

Osipov was also a member of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.

Osipov received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of Merit for the Fatherland of all four classes, the Alexander Nevsky Order, and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Furthermore Osipov since 2003 and since 2011 Knights Commander of the French Legion of Honour.

In 1997 he received the Leonhard Euler Gold Medal.
