Yusuf Halaçoğlu

Yusuf Halacoglu ( * 1949, Kozan, Adana) is a Turkish historian. He was from 1993 to 2008 chairman of Türk Tarih Kurumu ( Turkish Historical Society ).

School, university and profession

Halacoglu finished high school in 1967 and finished in 1971, graduated from the University of Istanbul. Three years later he became a research assistant and a PhD in 1978 on the settlement policy in the Ottoman Empire. In 1989 Halacoglu habilitation and was appointed Head of Department in the State Archives of the Turkish Prime Ministry. In 1990 he was promoted to deputy head of the archive. Two years later he became a professor at the Marmara University. There he was appointed Deputy Rector half a year later. He was appointed head of the Türk Tarih Kurumu 1993.

Halacoglu was forced to resign in July 2007 due to controversial data on the ethnic origin of the Kurdish Alevis from the line of Türk Tarih Kurumu. In 2008, Yusuf Halacoglu was dismissed. In January 2011 Halacoglu joined the Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi.

Controversial positions

Halacoglu often switched in the debate about the genocide of the Armenians in. There he took the official line of the Republic of Turkey, which denies the genocide recognized by numerous states. In the criticism he got in 2007, when he defended the thesis, a part of the Kurdish Alevis are converted Armenians. About 30 percent of Kurds were of Turkmen origin and the left-wing armed organization TIKKO ( Workers 'and Peasants' Liberation Army of Turkey) and the PKK were Armenian origin to a large extent.
