Yves is the French form of Ivo. The name is derived from yew: westindoeuropäisch Oiwa, including, for example, Old High German iwa or ywen welsh. Previously, especially the bow made of yew wood and therefore the name means figuratively " the archer".

Since 2005 circulating on the German-speaking countries a joke name, in which it is important that a child is called Üffes and comes out to demand that the name YVES is written. The first evidence is a blog entry of 2005. Since about 2008, the joke is widespread and Üffes has become a nickname for Yves.
