Lookout on the Zabelstein

The Zabelstein is a mountain in the Steigerwald. It is 489 meters high and provides a striking north-western tip and the boundary of the Steigerwald to the valley. It is located in the unincorporated area of the county Hundelshausen Schweinfurt. The villages thunder village, Wohnau (municipality Knetzgau ) and are Hundelshausen At its foot (municipality Michelau im Steigerwald ).

At the highest point of the stone Zabel is a transmitter with a 61 meter high antenna support, which was formerly used by the U.S. armed forces. Currently it uses the disaster. At the northern end of the ridge are the ruins of the former castle Zabelstein and some remains of a settlement. The Zabelstein castle was destroyed in 1525 in the peasant wars and burned in 1689 from a second time.

On the Zabelstein is at 475 m above sea level. NN a 20 meter high observation tower, free with its exposed situation in view of the Valley and the western foothills of the Steigerwald offers. In nice weather you can 80km look up in the Rhön. Labeled panorama photographs inform visitors about the visible terrain points.

In addition to the observation tower is the 2008 newly built Lingmann - house, which was built by Steigerwald Gerolzhofen Club in cooperation with the National Forest and is managed by the Steigerwald Club. The house is a popular accommodation hut for hikers. The previously standing on the same spot old house was demolished.
