Zakaria Tamer

Zakaria Tamer (Arabic زكريا تامر, born 1931 in Damascus ), also known by the spelling Sakarija Tamer, is a Syrian writer. He is one of the old masters of the Arabic short story and is probably one of the most influential Arab prose writers ever.

At thirteen, Tamer had prematurely left school and worked as a blacksmith in order to help his family. His literary activity began in 1958. His first book appeared in 1960 and made him famous overnight.

From 1969 to 1981 he worked first in the Syrian culture, later in the Ministry of Information and then as Head of Drama at Syrian TV. In 1981, Zakaria Tamer Syria left and now lives in the UK as a writer and journalist for Arab newspapers and magazines as well as a children's magazine. In 1987, the Lenos Verlag collection of short stories spring in the ashes. His work includes numerous collections of short stories and some children's books.
