Zalman Schachter-Shalomi

Zalman M. Schachter - Shalomi, known as " Reb Zalman " ( born August 28, 1924 in Zhovkva, then Poland, now Ukraine) is one of the most important representatives of the Jewish Renewal movement.

Schachter - Shalomi raised in Vienna, was in Vichy concentration camps and fled in 1941 to the United States where he worked as a rabbi. At Boston University he graduated with a masters in psychology of religion and his doctorate at the Hebrew Union College.

He then worked as a professor of Jewish Studies and Religious Studies at Temple University (Philadelphia ) and the University of Manitoba in Canada. He became one of the most recognizable icons of the Jewish 1968 movement.
