Reception

Zampa is one of the best-known works Hérold, the overture is played quite often. The comparison with Don Giovanni is certainly hardly justified. In 2005, the opera was performed again in the Stadttheater Gießen. 2008 there was an acclaimed new production at the Opéra -Comique in Paris under William Christie.

Maybe the horse name Zampa has something to do in Thomas Mann's novella Wälsungenblut with Hérold opera. However, it may also be that man came by Johann Nestroys Zampa the idler or the bride of gypsum or on very different paths to that name.
