After the socialist revolution in 1963 and the final declaration of independence from the British Crown in 1964 the government of Tanzania was created from the merger of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.

The Association represents the Zanzibar national football team on its own national team. Additionally, players are eligible to play in the common Tanzanian national football team, but not in the Tanzanian national football team of the mainland.
