Zaostrog

Zaostrog is a Croatian tourist town in southern Dalmatia. The settlement is situated 35km away from Makarska on the Croatian Adriatic coast.

History

The area around Zaostrog was inhabited before the birth of Christ, like a granite millstone from the Neolithic period shows that in 1953 found on the nearby mountain Viterbi. During the time of the Roman Empire to life Zaostrog was very culturally, some reliefs that time are now preserved as monuments and indicate a Illyrian settlement.

With the Croatian settlement in the course of the 7th century, the settlement was named Ostrog. In the year 950 the emperor of the Byzantine Empire Ostrog had converted into a fortified town. Below the fortress was built in the Middle Ages on a plateau the new settlement Zaostrog, which was first mentioned in 1494.

In the 14th century a monastery, which was used only by the Augustinians and Franciscans from 1468 on was. In the 17th century the settlement was partially moved a little further along the coast, in the old village part but still emerged until the 19th century two more churches. Also the monastery in the 18th century underwent a strong development.

In the recent time, the place was focused on tourism, accommodation exceed the population of this many times.
