Zaporizhzhia Pylon Triple

As Masttripel Zaporozhye two identical, each 74.5 m high triple portal masts are designated in Zaporizhia in Ukraine. The masts form a transmission line crossing of Khortytsia, an island in the river Dnepr, on the estuary, which flows around the island on the east side. The river crossing has a span of 900 m and serves the energy dissipation of the hydroelectric plant Dnjeprostroj.

The Tripelmasten are widely visible because of their height and exposed location as a landmark and an unofficial emblem of Zaporizhia. The unusual mast design emphasizes the pair mast under the overhead line crossings.

History

The overhead line crossing, which was one of the first of its kind in the former Soviet Union, was built in 1930-1932 and originally consisted of four poles at each end of the tension field associated to 63.5 meters height above a provided with a railing catwalk. During the Second World War, the masts were destroyed or degraded.

Between 1945 and 1949, the masts were built according to the old plans using the old foundations again. The unused foundation for the fourth mast on the island Khortytsia still exists today and is visible on satellite images or aerial photographs.

Construction

Each of the masts has above the catwalk in 71.5 meters in height, a single beam, can be mounted on the six conductors. However, it carries only four conductors, two on the outside and two on the inside. There is a support structure that leads down to the catwalk at the center of each truss half. There is attached to the bottom of the insulator, on which depends the central conductor cable.

Although the triple 18 carries conductors for six 150 kV circuits, only five circuits are currently installed. A sixth circuit runs parallel to modern tubular steel poles.

All poles of the triple are painted red-white and provided with a ladder.
